Ankhs and Poems, Part One
April 23, 2024

I began with the goal of making the red ankh look like it's pulsing with energy and appearing in a big flash of brilliance.

It wasn't long before I got inspired to do a 'peaceful' ankh, inspiration achieved by inverting (using the "control+I" command in Photoshop) the scan of the first piece.

This wasn't the end of my inspiration. I learned at a local gathering that one branch of our local library was featuring an exhibit of artwork and poetry. The poet would write the poem and the artist would illustrate it. But at other times, the two person effort would begin with the artist's creation, to which the poet would respond. I realized I could write poems inspired by my artwork.

I sat with the possibilities for this for a while, and then I finally began with these two pieces of art. I started with a poem for the peaceful ankh. I thought of Ptah, who has the title of "The Peaceful and Reconciling One". But I wanted to explore the peaceful vibes without being deity specific:

An ankh-shaped window in the dark,
gentle emanation,
steady emanation,
Such soft brilliance
is so easily received.
I am the thirsty one
whose soul is quenched.

Then I turned my attention to the energetic Ankh. I thought of Set (or Set-Ra) as I explored my feelings:

Surging, emerging ankh of
hot radiance,
warming radiance,
This pulsing fire-light
demands attention.
I who was weary
now rise with strength.

This isn't the end of my explorations. A couple of commenters on my facebook post thought there ought to be four ankhs. At first, I wasn't so enthused, but as I played in Photoshop, one result pleased my eye:

This was achieved by a 90 degree slide of the hue shifter in Photoshop, and then an inversion.
Any variation of the 90 degree slide results in purple and green ankhs.
(A 180 degree slide results in the red and blue ankhs merely 'changing place', so 90 degrees is the halfway point.)

As I wait for the pink and green aida canvas to arrive, I'll be pondering poem ideas as well. I was thinking I could be led by 'the four elements', and as I reread my first two poems, it seems that's what I've already got going.

I will begin with the purple 'airy' ankh.
