"Some scholars have seen the two faces of the bifrontal Hathor mask as symbolizing Hathor's double role as a goddess of birth and death". (Page 157) This double role could also represent Hathor-Sekhmet's "dual nature of Hathor, who is both gentle and benevolent and fierce and destructive." (Page 157) Pinch further posits: "To show Hathor with two or four faces may have evoked the image of the solar eye which could look in all directions at once to protect the Sun God - and also perhaps the donor of the mask or column from his enemies." (Page 158) |
